Dee began fighting for John the only way she knew how-at his side in the hospital and in his train shop. She had to keep John and his work alive. Angels appeared at both of their sides. For John, the angels took the form of dedicated doctors--Legionnaires disease was quickly diagnosed and treatment begun. John was kept in the coma for six weeks.
For Dee the angels appeared in the form of friends-one, who happened to be in between jobs, offering to help man the store so Dee could make daily visits to the hospital. Another, a compassionate customer, knew how to operate the cash register and offered to teach Dee how to use it. And many a model train aficionado came by to share their passions, stories and knowledge with Dee during the long, lonely hours as she wandered about the store praying for John. The trains, trees, ponds, villas...and tunnels became Dee's world.
John was waiting in a tunnel of his own. The day finally arrived when he was to be brought out of his coma. Just beforehand the doctors explained to Dee that he would likely have memory loss and be quite disoriented. The moment had at last arrived. Dee sat at his side. Slowly John opened his eyes. He looked up and saw Dee and reached out to take her hand. Dee leaned over offering a silent prayer of love and gratitude for John's safe return, "What is it, Honey?"
"The store, Dee. How is the store?" John spoke hoarsely from all of the tubing just removed from his throat.
"The store is just fine, Dear. Just fine."
It took John several weeks to regain his strength, but just like the little engine that thought he could, John did. John is back to his old self-healthy and strong. Now John and Dee man the Westside Model Train store side by side. For the two of them there was a light at the end of the tunnel. And it was a train, but you see, in their case that turns out to be a very, very good thing.

John knows trains-especially the model varieties. Just stop in at his Westside Model Train store on Durango Street in Las Vegas and you'll be hooked. And Dee, his wife, will tell you all you need to know about creating inspiring landscape-ponds, trees, villas...and tunnels. Dee, you see, knows a bit about trains herself. No, Dee didn't always know trains. She came upon her knowledge through baptism. Baptism? Yeah-baptism by fire. You see, Dee is wild about John; loves the man to death-or perhaps better stated would be 'through death.'
Just over a year ago John got sick-very, very sick. So sick, in fact, that he willingly allowed Dee to take him to the doctor to see what was wrong. John ended up being rushed to the hospital. First one doctor, then another and another and another entered John's room. Dee waited alone outside. Then it was announced to her that John had only twelve hours to live. He was on a runaway train. A medical coma was induced so that John could be tested and studied, and hopefully, diagnosed and treated.
